Welcome!

Welcome back!

It's been a few years since the last post. We recently got the PADI certification, which has opened a lot of new areas to dive. We also got a GoPro Hero9 camera with waterproof protective case

Armed with these tools, we are resuming the exploration of the sea life in southern Florida, now adding scuba diving sea reefs and all the beautiful life within

We have been diving with the great guys from Key Biscayne Divers paradise. Very friendly and super helpful for beginners like us. Special thanks to Marco!

We hope you enjoy these new posts!

Key Biscayne Beach
We recently moved to Miami, and soon we discovered the beautiful shores of Key Biscayne. It's a great place for casual snorkeling, beach walking, or just enjoying the warm waters of south Florida.

As we both have a degree in biology, we instantly started attempting to identify the different species of fish, seaweeds and other beautiful sea life we found during our short weekend excursions. However, we found it a bit frustrating, as there are few comprehensive places where one can identify the names of the creatures we were discovering. Unless of course, if you already possess good knowledge of marine biology (we dont! Our degree is in molecular biology :).

Thus, we decided to take a different approach. We acquired a basic underwater camera, and decided to start documenting and sharing our findings. That way, we can at least have a practical understanding of the flora and fauna that surrounds us. Once we photograph an animal or plant, we will try to identify the species, and carry out a bit of research. Therefore, each page will be like a learning document for that creature. Of course, we hope that readers may help us identify them, and provide further insight as well. Please let us know if you think the name we have identified in the post is incorrect!.

Also, we will try to help others with the same drive and curious determination, so they can easily find the names and descriptions, and get acquainted with the starfish or sponge they just saw diving. To facilitate the identification, we will tag the pictures with simple, lay words, describing colors and highlights, and also by listing them in order of the most frequent sights, the ones you are most likely to swim into.

I hope you enjoy diving into this journey with us!

And yes... the Apprentice Manatee. Apprentice, as we are ourselves learning about these wonderful marine organisms. And Manatee, for we can't think of a more representative animal of the south Florida shallow seas. We saw two specimens very early, during our first winter here. We were even fortunate enough to swim by their side. They are peaceful, majestic, in their slow pace. We impatiently wait for the day when we will see one again. And this time, capture it with the camera. We love Manatees!
